Romi Crawford discusses and presents outcome project sketches by members of the New Art School Modality’s FESTAC ‘77 course pedagogical community (course presented October – December 2023 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago). A broadsheet and a video work include contributions by course members, including Chris Wray, Haerim Lee, Ryan Tenney, Spencer Hutchinson, Douglas Williams, Ekalan Hou, Myriam Zarhloul, Haki Madhubuti, Karen Francois, Learenna Reynolds, Lloyd Rice, Andrew Apter, K. Kofi Moyo, Antoinette Myers Perry (Dr. Toni), Romi Crawford, Emilia Mello, Gerald Williams, Analise Samantha Delphine Sesay, Dindga McCannon, Fred Moten, Stefano Harney, Mackda Ghebremariam Tesfau’, Chaski No, Roy Lewis, Taylor Harriett Payton, Abdul Alkalimat, Petra Matic and others.
On Sunday 4 February at 12.30pm, the New Art School Modality presents a recreation of Darlene Blackburn’s performance ‘From Africa to America’, first staged at FESTAC ‘77, by dance students of Calabar University where Blackburn previously taught. Dancer and choreographer Darlene Blackburn was born in 1942 in Chicago, where she continues to live and work today.
On Monday 5 February from 10-11.30am Romi Crawford will be in discussion with Darlene Blackburn, Analise Samantha Delphine Sesay and Ryan Tenney, members of the New Art School Modality ‘FESTAC ‘77 course pedagogical community. They will discuss the work of revisiting FESTAC ‘77.
