Dina Khouri explores through painting the tensions of opposing landscapes. Her ongoing project, Painting at a Loss, began in 2016, explores how formal voids or structural gaps exist as surfaces for building. For Khouri, painting on and between standardised industrial frames affords viewers a perceptual experience analogous to encountering and filling gaps in knowledge. “How do you create an image on a gap, or layers of gaps? My paintings are about what appears between. I paint behind the frame, between the frame, and in the holes of the mesh.” The four paintings here, all produced in Lagos, mark the third city-specific iteration of the series, following projects in Beirut and Berlin.
