Katrin Winkler’s research-based art practice examines how historical events and their consequences are kept in public consciousness through visual strategies and demonstrative actions. This digital photomontage work is based on found archival footage documenting the anti-colonial 1929 Women’s War in Nigeria where women rebelled against the imposition of taxes by the British colonial government. The use of palm leaves played a crucial role in these protests, for they were passed from one hand to another with secret messages that galvanised women into action. Through both text and imagery, the digital montages address this history by presenting a fictionalised conversation between women who were active during the protests.
